Non-profit organizations that have been created to fight for different types of rights need to be funded for them to be successful. Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is an initiative that was started about five years ago to facilitate the operations of groups that protect human, civil, and immigrant rights. The organization was established in 2013 and has to date transformed the lives of several Mexican immigrants.
Its founders are Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin who are well-established journalists. They are determined to protect the rights of Mexican immigrants who are based in Arizona. The two of them are the executives of the Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media, which are trusted newspapers in Arizona.
They published several stories that incriminated the Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio by exposing his corrupt activities. Arpaio was irritated by the articles, and he ordered for their arrest in October 2007. The arrest was illegal, and this made them be offered $3.75 million as a settlement fee.
Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund has made donations towards different foundations. The Arizona Justice Project (AJP) is one of these organization. It was formed to offer legal representation to individuals who pleaded innocent but were jailed and those who injustices against them are apparent but have been ignored. Read more: Phoenix New Time
AJP understands that low-income people do not get justice since most of them lack money to pay for legal representation. It has offered to help people who are wrongfully convicted, inmates who have life threatening condition but are not provided proper health care, and those who have been over punished such as the juveniles with life sentences.
According to the organization, the freedom of everyone is compromised whenever one suffers injustice. The Arizona Justice Project has accomplished its mission by working with pro-bono lawyers, Arizona-based law schools, and investigation experts to acquire evidence, witnesses, and new information.
The organization is currently working on 36 active cases. It has been offering free newsletters that inform the community about the progress of its cases, providing law student and lawyers with updates on emerging forensic science, and creating public awareness on misunderstandings that are related with wrongful detentions. The Arizona Dream Act Coalition (ADAC) is another organization that has benefited from the donations of Michael and Jim. It was started by Arizona-based undocumented students who were against a law that was passed in 2006.
The legislation denied them an opportunity to access scholarships that were sponsored with public money and forced them to pay very high tuition fees for them to study in the United States. Despite being the undocumented, the immigrant students were not afraid to fight against injustices.
ADAC has been fighting for human and immigrant rights as well as affordable tuition fees. They have filed a case against the Arizona governor for not giving them driving licenses even though they had the Department of Homeland Security’s permission to be in the United States.
All Races Can Prosper Underneath the American Dream
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have dedicated their lives and their finances and their organization to transforming the United States of America to become a more hospitable place where illegal immigrants are not only welcomed but they are embraced and integrated into this great society.
They had always been advocates of immigration reform but their passion only heightened when they felt racial injustice in their own lives. They had routinely used the Village Voice Media to report on Sheriff Joseph Arpaio who was known to use cruel and vindictive measures to hurt the Hispanic community. This included things such as brutality, concentration camp like work in prisons, and needless violence.
As Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin reported on these things Sheriff Joseph Arpaio thought he would come into their homes illegally and arrest them. He attempted to show that their organization was obstructing justice for using their First Amendment right. This was a clear violation of the Constitution. This violation resulted in a settlement of $3.75 million being released to Lacey and Larkin.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were not intimidated, they were not scared, and they certainly were not silenced, they used this money to begin the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. This nonprofit only holds training seminars that helps young reformers gain the techniques and skills needed to continue pushing for change on the grandest stage of them all, the United States Congress.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is also the proud sponsor of the Front Page Confidential. This magazine seeks to inform all who may read it that the right to freedom of speech that belongs to Americans is being stripped away from us silently behind closed doors. They hope that by educating all Americans that a few brave men will stand and fight this injustice.
