Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin had careers in journalism before they decided to go full throttle at philanthropy. In Arizona, the duo had formed a weekly publication that was centered in Phoenix. The newspaper would highlight developing stories in the region.
At the time when Mike and Jim were running their publication, Joe Arpaio was the sitting Sheriff of Maricopa County. The man was one of the most respected sheriffs in the United States. Amidst all his toughness, Joe Arpaio’s career was ridden with countless controversies. The sheriff had committed a lot of injustices against some factions of the Phoenix populace.
He was well known for singling out individuals by their race. Most of those who were affected by Joe’s discrimination included people from Latin America. Joe Arpaio would apply the law selectively to ensure immigrants got the harshest treatment in his jurisdiction.
When Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin got wind of the injustices Joe Arpaio was committing, they decided to highlight the story on their publication. The story went viral, and the duo was arrested. During their incarceration, the duo was held for forty-eight hours without being told what they were being given their charges.
When Mike and Jim were released, they sought for recourse in court. They filed a suit against Joe Arpaio for abuse of office and wanted the court to order Sheriff to settle them a total of $3 million.
After a victory in court, Mike and Jim decided to devote their settlement money into a fund that agitates for the observance of human rights within the immigrant communities. So far, the fund has helped a lot of individuals get recourse whenever their fundamental rights are violated even as immigrants.
